I am not a scum, I am a human being!

Usually I don't mind all the lawyer jokes and other nasty things people say about my profession. On November 22, 1994, however, someone went too far. I was working on a case of employment discrimination against a car dealership that refused to hire my client because they didn't think his vision was good enough for the job. I thought this was a clear-cut violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act. They honestly thought my client could not do the job, although they never bothered to test his vision to find out. They thought he was suing just to extort money from them.

This dealership is part of a large chain that is well known in this area. The son (I think) of the chain's owner came to court to take part in a settlement conference. The case did settle that day, and his lawyer walked out of the courtroom. The dealer stayed behind for a second, looked at me, said "Scum", and walked out. Now I wouldn't really care if anyone else said that, but a car dealer? Now wait a second...
